  • Minnesota Northern Lights over the Pigeon River

Over the past 17 days, I’ve canoed about 250 or so miles from Crane Lake to Lake Superior via the Border Route in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. I joined Amy and Dave Freeman of Wilderness Classroom. They been out all summer and paddled over 2,300 miles from the Great Slave Lake to Superior.…

  • Minnesota Northern Lights

The Minnesota northern lights were out tonight, so we drove up the Gunflint looking for a good location to view them. It turned out that Northern Lights Lake provided the best view. We watched them dance above our heads for hours. For about a half hour, they were so bright that the almost full moon…

  • Rosebush Creek Waterfalls on Minnesota’s North Shore

This small creek near Cutface Creek rarely runs in the summer, so if you want to photograph it, you must get there in the spring. This is the biggest waterfall on the creek. It’s about 8 feet high. The USGS topo maps call this Rosebush Creek, but long-time Grand Marais and north shore residents call…

  • Lutsen Ice Caves

With Lake Superior solid, it’s been so-so to walk along the shore on the ice. Taking advantage of the frozen lake, I wandered down to the Lutsen sea caves and crawled back into one of the ice caves just at sunset to get this picture.

  • Johnson Falls in the BWCA

Johnson Falls flow into Pine Lake. This is a short trip into the BWCA, but could be accomplished during a longer day trip. Very worthwhile! And I thought the falls at the Stairway Portage were the best in the BWCA. Not so, Johnson Falls has it.

  • Lake Nipigon Kayaking

Lake Nipigon is a four hour drive from Grand Marais. This four hours puts it an equal distance away from me as the Apostle Islands, so it becomes a hard call on which way to drive for a sea kayaking trip. I’ve put some thought into this now and have come to the conclusion that…
