During the workshop, we’ll cover stacking, tracking, blending and focus stacking. If we get a cloudy night, we’ll also cover advanced composite lighting. We will have multiple classroom sessions, including one on the above topics and a processing session. We’ll also have a printing session, and you’ll leave the workshop with a night sky print of your work and see how getting an accurate print from a night sky file is accomplished.
Dates: Not currently scheduled. You can see the list of current photo workshops here.
This event is in cooperation with and under a Special Use Permit from U.S. Forest Service, Gunflint Ranger District.

Itinerary
The Advanced Night Sky Photography Workshop on Lake Superior is based in Grand Marais. My expectation for this workshop is that we will start the classroom sessions in the late afternoon, do dinner and then shoot sunset and stay out until 2am or so depending on the conditions. Sunday night will be a shorter night. Take this itinerary with a huge grain of salt, because the times will change. I’ll update you on the times about 60 days before the workshop.
Day 1 (Wednesday): 6pm to 1am or so
The night sky photography workshop begins at seven with a slideshow about the steps of stacking, focus stacking and blending multiple photos into a composite image. All the images will be shot from the same tripod placement and subject, but the multiple images will allow a greater signal-to-noise ratio and allow us to achieve a cleaner foreground. Most likely this will be a Lake Superior night unless the northern lights are out. If the aurora show up, we’ll head inland.
Day 2 (Thursday): 6pm to 2am or so
We start in the classroom with a slideshow and demonstration on how to process night sky images using Lightroom and my night sky presets. I designed the presets so that you can fine tune your images and maximize the potential in 30 seconds or less. You’ll receive a free copy of the presets and the presets manual. We’ll also cover processing stacks and blends in Photoshop. You will need Photoshop and Lightroom for these sessions. After the classroom, we head out for a night of shooting.
Day 3 (Friday): 6pm to 2am or so
We start in the classroom by sharing two to three images that you’ve taken and processed during the workshop. You’ll receive constructive feedback that will help improve your photography over the following nights. Then we’ll head out into the field to photograph the night sky.
Day 4 (Saturday): 6pm to 1am
We start in the classroom with an processing session. Alternatively, based on interest, we’ll head out to shoot the sunset instead of spending time in the classroom. If we do the classroom session, you’ll have time to process your images, ask questions and get ready for the night. After the classroom, we’ll head out to different locations than those in the previous nights.
Day 5 (Sunday): 1pm to 4pm, 9pm to Midnight
For people that want to stay Sunday night, we’ll have a final session of night photography. In the afternoon, we will work on printing one image for each person. You’ll take home that print.
