In this workshop, you will learn how to capture and edit stunning infrared images using your regular camera and a 690nm or 720nm filter or a converted camera.
You will also have plenty of opportunities to practice your skills in various outdoor settings and discover what makes a good infrared shot. You will learn about the Wood effect, which creates a dreamy contrast between foliage and sky, and how to modify your camera for infrared photography if you want to take it to the next level. This workshop is suitable for beginners and intermediate photographers who want to expand their creative horizons with infrared photography.

You will learn how to use your regular camera and a 690nm or 720nm filter or a converted camera to capture infrared light, and how to edit your images in Lightroom Classic using custom profiles and LUTs.
You will also learn about the Wood effect, which produces a striking contrast between white foliage and dark sky, and how to modify your camera for infrared photography if you want to explore this technique further.
This workshop is designed for photographers of all levels who want to expand their creative possibilities with infrared photography. You will have plenty of opportunities to practice your skills in various outdoor locations and discover what makes a good infrared shot. Equipment notes:
For this course, you will need one of the following:
- You can use your regular camera and a 690nm or 720nm filter. I’d suggest the 690nm from Singh-Ray.
- A digital camera converted to infrared. I’d suggest either a 590nm conversion or a full spectrum conversion. With the latter, you’ll need filters to refine your spectrum. I’d suggest starting with a 590nm filter.
Software Requirements:
For all the editing demonstrations and the custom profile creations, we will use the following software:
- Adobe Lightroom Classic
- Adobe Photoshop
Agenda
Day 1: Thursday
- 10am: Meet in the conference room at the hotel for instruction on infrared photography.
- Noon: Break for lunch
- 1pm to 5:30pm: Infrared photography field session
- 5:30pm to 7pm: Dinner break
- 7pm to 8:30pm: Optional sunset shoot
Day 2: Friday
- 5am to 8am: Sunrise and field IR session
- 8am to 10am: Break for breakfast
- 10am: Classroom session on how to create custom Lightroom Classic profiles and LUTs to make editing easier. You will create your own custom profiles based on your camera and filter or conversion.
- Noon: Break for lunch
- 1:30pm to 3:30pm: Classroom session on editing infrared images. We will use the custom profiles and LUTs to edit photos. We’ll also cover black and white conversions.
- 3:30pm to 6pm: Infrared field session in Grand Marais covering infrared and cityscapes.
- Sunset on your own
Day 3: Saturday
- 5am to 8am: Sunrise and field IR session
- Break for breakfast
- 10am: Classroom feedback session or field session
- Noon: Lunch in the field
- Afternoon: field session
- 5pm to 6:30pm: Dinner break
- 6:30pm to 8:30pm: Moonrise over the Grand Marais lighthouse session
Day 4: Sunday
- 5am to 8am: Sunrise and field IR session
- Break for breakfast
- 9:30 to 11am: Image review. You should submit up to five images via email. 1200 pixels on the long edge and jpeg format.
Note: The agenda may change based on the conditions. I’ll send out updates to the schedule about two weeks before the workshop.
Teaching Topics
Maximum number of participants: 8
Level: This workshop is for all levels of photographers and works best for photographers using digital cameras. You will need either an infrared filter for your camera or a camera converted to infrared.
Activity level: Expect up to 3 miles hiking each day.
What’s included in the workshop fee: Quality small group and one-on-one instruction. Conference room for classroom time. Fun!
What’s not included in the workshop fee: Transportation to Grand Marais and photography locations. Carpooling is highly recommended. Lodging. Meals except for breakfast which is provided by the lodge.
Lodging partner: The lodging partner is within walking distance of downtown Grand Marais. After you register, you’ll receive information about booking your room in the room block. You’ll need to make your room registration separately from the workshop fee.

Getting to Grand Marais: Grand Marais, Minnesota is 110 miles north of Duluth, Minnesota on Highway 61. Duluth boasts a small international airport. It’s 260 miles north of Minneapolis, Minnesota, which has an international airport that also acts as a regional hub. Grand Marais is 128 kilometers south of Thunder Bay, Ontario on Highway 61. Thunder Bay has a small airport. Car rentals are available at the airports.
Weather: The average temps are 52°F for lows and 71°F for highs.
Equipment list: After registration, you will receive a suggested equipment list and participant package. The package will discuss equipment options, photography techniques and more.
